John Terry dives head-first to deny Slovenia

England v Slovenia picture: John Terry dives head-first to deny Slovenia

Talk about putting your body on the line - former captain John Terry did exactly that by diving headfirst in front of a Zlatko Dedic shot as England successfully saw out their 1-0 win over Slovenia in their World Cup Group C decider.

The Chelsea skipper is renowned for his no-nonsense style of defending - which divides opinion among the press and England fans on a game-by-game basis.

But, whatever your thoughts on the square-shouldered centre-back, there is little doubting his commitment to the cause - and the above picture shows just why.

With England, who had earlier been so dominant and could have by more, hanging on for dear life against the Slovenians, a break down the right saw the ball fall to striker Dedic inside the box.

But Johnson (also pictured above in a not-so-flattering pose) and Terry combined to deny him a shot on goal, with the ball eventually going out of play for a goal-kick.

Throwing his body in the way is part and parcel of Terry's game - and he should certainly be commended for his contribution in a desperate last-ditch rearguard action that repelled a couple of very dangerous Slovenia attacks late in the game.
